International Press Freedom Day

The commemoration of Unesco this May 3,2021 has a slogan ” Information as public good”. It is symbolic : during pandemic time people all over the globe understood the crucial role of frue and accurate information as well as challenges for independent voices. Press freedom and journalists have never been challenged that much before.

UNESCO, RSF, CPJ, OSCE, IFJ, EFJ and other organizations report about unprecedented pressure on freedom of expression. More than 1.500 media workers have been killed in recent 10 years, 9 cases from 10 ended with impunity.

New legal restrictions, attacks and different forms of censorship and all forms of pressure on journalists take place everywhere. At the same time gender discrimination is growing all over the world, and in the media as well.

At the 65th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women that is currently underway (March 15-26, 2021), the focus is on evolving a global roadmap towards “achieving full equality in public life”. In the digital epoch, this includes enabling women’s effective participation online. Mainstream social media platforms today represent privately controlled public arenas that are re-configuring social interaction and political democracy. Viral sexism, misogyny, and gender-based violence – endemic to these platforms – pose a real threat, ruthlessly discriminating against and excluding women and people of non-normative genders.

DAPHNE CARUANA GALIZIA: One step toward Justice !!

Recent developments in the assassination case of Daphne Caruana Galizia have led to one of the three accused of executing the murder, Vincent Muscat, currently in custody, pleading guilty to the charge. This has led to Muscat being condemned to 15 years effective jail time, meaning that there are now two separate cases: the case against Vince Muscat and the case against the Degiorgio brothers, the other two accused of being the executioners.
