GE urges to act against femicides in Europe

The European chapter of the Global Alliance for the Media and Gender (GAMAG Europe, GE), observes with great concern the new outbreak of sexist aggressions which has resulted in deaths and violence towards children, including murders, to “punish” their mothers. The tragic events that took place recently in Spain are a proof of this. The number of victims – which already exceeds 20 murders in the first six months of the year – is increasing so rapidly that the sum that we publish here today could unfortunately increase in a short period of time. This figure is swollen by women of all ages and backgrounds: urban and rural, workers and professionals, peasants and housewives, young and old. There are also journalists, such as the photojournalist murdered in Marmolejo (Jaén, Spain).

GE urge actuar contra los feminicidios en Europa

El capítulo europeo de la Alianza Global para los Medios de Comunicación y el Género (GAMAG Europa, GE), observa con gran preocupación un rebrote de las agresiones machistas con resultado de muerte y de la violència vicaria que utiliza a los niños y niñas, disponiendo de sus vidas para “castigar” a las madres. Los luctuosos hechos registrados en España en los últimos días lo demuestran, y el recuento del número de víctimas- que ya supera los 20 en los seis primeros meses del año- aumenta con tanta rapidez que la suma que anotamos hoy quedaría desgraciadamente superada en poco tiempo. Engrosan esta cifra mujeres de toda edad y condición: urbanas o rurales, obreras y profesionales, campesinas y amas de casa, jóvenes o mayores. También periodistas, como es el caso de la reportera gráfica asesinada en Marmolejo (Jaén, España).

GAMAG EUROPA (GE) El capítulo europeo de la Alianza Global para los Medios de Comunicación y el Género exige que se ponga fin a la lucha por la libertad de expresión en Bielorrusia. Las autoridades de Bielorrusia y el presidente Alexander Lukashenko deben poner fin urgentemente a los ataques contra periodistas, blogueros, intelectuales y todas las voces independientes del país y deben respetar los derechos humanos fundamentales y la libertad de expresión como parte crucial de la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos.

GAMAG EUROPA demands the immediate release of Protasevich and Sapega.

GAMAG EUROPA (GE), the European branch of the Global Alliance for Media and Gender demands an end to the oppression of freedom of expression in Belarus. We call on the Belarus authorities, together with President Alexander Lukashenko, to end all forms of harassment and attacks on journalists, bloggers, intellectuals and all independent voices in the country, with immediate effect.

Freedom of expression is an integral part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and must be respected.

GAMAG Europe condemns attacks on media workers in Gaza

London, May 18, 2021. (Statement of GAMAG Europe).

As the first female Palestinian journalist succumbs to ongoing Israeli military strikes on Gaza, GAMAG Europe today joins the worldwide chorus of condemnation of all attacks on media workers and organisations operating in the Gaza Strip.

Four months pregnant, Reema Saad died under the rubble of her home along with her husband and children on Wednesday night, after the family apartment in the Gaza City neighborhood of Tal Al-Hawa was bombarded by Israeli aircraft.
