GAMAG EUROPE (GE), with #SinEllasNoVoy (#I’mNotGoingWithoutThem)
We ask for your adherence to the Manifesto of the feminist journalists of Castilla y León so that the voice of women journalists is heard louder
• The program of the I International Congress of Journalism “Miguel Delibes” that is being held these days in Valladolid, Spain, only includes five women journalists compared to 19 men
• This distribution is unequal, does not represent the plurality of society and makes a good part of the sector invisible, which are women journalists.
Castilla y León, October 2, 2021
GAMAG-EUROPE (GE) supports the manifesto of the Association of Feminist Journalists of Castilla y León (APFCyL) in which it requests a rectification in the program of the I International Journalism Congress organized by the Miguel Delibes Foundation and the newspaper ‘El Norte de Castilla’ in Valladolid. The reason is the “pyrrhic representation left to women journalists in this congress.”
The APFCyL denounces the lack of parity “for reasons of proportionality and equity”, since the only women speakers who will attend the congress are: Mamen Mendizábal, Mara Torres, Lucía Méndez, Marisa R. Palop and the correspondent for Xinhua (China), Feng Junwei. The rest of the 19 participants are men, which is “a form of symbolic violence that undermines the achievements and contributions of so many good professional women (…) and the expectations of future women journalists who see that their referents are second-rate ”.
An unfair distribution that does not represent plurality and makes invisible a good part of the sector. In the Faculties of Journalism and Communication there are more than “60 per cent of female graduates” and “the newsrooms and press offices have an increasing proportion of female workforce”, says the association in the manifesto.
The feminist journalists of Castilla y León have launched a campaign on social networks under the hashtag #SinEllasNoVoy (#I’mNotGoingWithoutThem) for public institutions to withdraw their sponsorship of the I Congress of International Journalism until the panel of participants is rectified and “give women journalists the prominence they deserve”.
GAMAG-EUROPE (GE), in accordance with its principles of promoting equality in and through the media, shares and supports the APFCyL‘s protest about the underrepresentation of women journalists at the I International Journalism Congress organized by the Miguel Delibes Foundation.
GE is the European regional chapter of the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG), made up of a thousand people and groups, including the Association of Feminist Journalists of Castilla y León.
At GAMAG-EUROPE we believe in the strength of networks to give strength to local proposals in favor of equality in the media and professionals in the sector and so that global actions reach the smallest places.
