8M: GAMAG EUROPA pays tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives for reporting

March-08-2024

In this 8M, GAMAG EUROPA (GE) wants to focus its tribute to women on all the SILENCED VOICES of journalists –women and men– who have been murdered in these six months of Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people.

The exhibition “Veus Silenciades” (“Silenced Voices”), recently inaugurated by the College of Journalists of Catalonia (CPC), is a symbol of tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Each one are people with names and surnames who have a story behind them as journalism professionals. They are voices that have been silenced by the brutality of war.

From GAMAG EUROPA we strongly condemn the murders of information professionals on the battlefield, because without the direct testimony of professional and citizen journalism, the world will not be able to know the scope of this tragedy.

The provisional figures of murdered journalists are around a hundred. According to data from the CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists), which makes a rigorous and exhaustive count of the victims confirmed by one or more sources, the death toll is at least 95 journalists (90 Palestinians, 2 Israelis and 3 Lebanese). The International Federation of Journalists (98) and Reporters Without Borders (103) raise this tragic balance, and some Palestinian sources –both news media and journalistic unions– go so far as to count up to 132 fatalities of communication professionals.

In this 8M, GAMAG EUROPA also wants to pay tribute to the journalists who have seen their Voices Silenced during Russia’s two years of war against Ukraine.
