SUMMARY:Towards a new gender deal in media and communication
DESCRIPTION:What: Pre-conference at the 2023 International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)\, Lyon (France) \nWhen: 8 July 2023.  10 am – 5 pm CET \nWhere: Online and In-person\, Sciences-Po Lyon. Room 3.08 \nTo register\, email luciaglv@ucm.es \n  \nDescription: How far have we come in fostering gender-aware education in our academic contexts? What directions\, and methods\, should critical analysis take to expose and address old and new forms of resistance to gender equality and gender mainstreaming? How have these forms of resistance been reshaped in the pandemic context and how are they currently operating across sectors\, within and beyond academia? How can education\, research and advocacy activities intersect (inform and respond to) ongoing efforts to foster a New gender Deal for the Media and the Digital? \nThe event reflects the shared concerns and willingness to collaborate\, amongst different realities and networks\, within and outside academia\, in making feminist pedagogies\, methodologies and educational practices a strategic pillar in forthcoming change-making initiatives for women’s communication rights and media gender justice. \nThe event will comprise keynote speakers\, networking panel\, and an interactive session\, placing specific emphasis on identifying priorities for collaboration between research\, education and advocacy towards the design\, articulation and implementation of a ‘New Gender Deal’ in the field of media and communication. \nRead more here: https://iamcr.org/lyon2023/new-gender-deal \n

SUMMARY:GAMAG at WSIS+20: Gender Equality and Inclusion in Our Digital Future
DESCRIPTION:Join GAMAG\, WACC and partners at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) High Level event. \nObjective: To review the Global Digital Compact and to advocate for strengthening of gender equality in the global and national digital ecosystems. \nZoom registration: https://www.itu.int/net4/wsis/forum/2024/Home/Registration#remote\nThen select the session “Gender equality and Inclusion in our Digital Future”. 29 May at 5pm CET \nPanelists from WACC\, GAMAG\, UNAM\, IT for Change\, META\, UNESCO and the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls\, its causes and consequences (Jordan) \nContext: The Internet\, its technologies\, the global digital architecture and all elements of local and global tech ecosystems today are still far from being inclusive and empowering for women and girls. A key question raised at the WSIS plus 10 review in 2013 was why the digital space had not lived up to expectations. At the time\, new configurations of power had resulted in an information society that was exclusionary\, with little place for women and with new forms of misogyny. Gender advocates at the time noted the marginalization of women from the agenda and exclusion from Internet governance processes. The concerns persist today\, with further marginalization of women’s rights activists by key global stakeholders from crucial decision-making processes. Women’s rights are being eroded\, in an era where a Global Digital Compact (GDC) is proposed as a roadmap for key digital principles globally\, to be agreed on during the September 2024 Summit of the Future. Power asymmetries today have exacerbated discrimination and violence against women on the Internet. The 2022 Gender Digital Divide Index Report attests to a deepening of the divide. The Internet\, including Artificial Intelligence\, have sharpened inequality between women and men. The divide is evident in issues of Internet availability and affordability\, digital literacy\, participation in online news media\, STEM education\, online privacy\, safety\, security and trust\, legislation\, policy\, practices and decision making. In recent times\, misinformation\, harmful content and sexist hate speech against women\, increasing of sexual exploitation and other forms of technology-facilitated gender-based violence against women and girls\, undermine democracy and human rights.

SUMMARY:CSW: Beijing +30 review of Section J "Women & Media"
DESCRIPTION:Title: Safeguarding Women’s Communication & Digital Rights \nWhen: March 11\, 2025. 6.30-8.00 pm EST \nWhere: CCUN 8th Floor\, 777 UN Plaza\, NY. and on Zoom https://bit.ly/SectionJ_Media  \n \nDescription\nThe Beijing Platform for Action’s Section ‘J’ called attention to the centrality of media and digital technologies for gender equality and women’s empowerment. 30 years later\, indicators of change evidence a mix of snail’s pace progress on some measures\, stagnation on others and regression in yet others. The parallel event is a space to evaluate the current context\, to highlight areas for a gender and communication agenda and contribute to the Beijing+30 review. \nThe specific objectives are to:\n• Review the implementation of Section J of the Beijing Platform for Action and its strategic objectives.\n• Propose guidelines for an action agenda on gender and communication to promote gender equality in and through the media in the post-2030 agenda. \nOrganizers: WACC & GAMAG \nDownload flyer
